In 2020, almost 6 million people in America suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Whether or not Alzheimer’s affects you or someone you love, research into the disease is a worthwhile cause. If you’re interested in getting involved to support Alzheimer’s care and research, then read on to find out how.
About Alzheimer’s research
What do researchers and non-profit organizations hope to achieve by funding and conducting research into Alzheimer’s? Here are some of the key areas being worked toward:
- More effective diagnosis methods
- New treatment strategies
- How to manage Alzheimer’s and its symptoms
- How to prevent Alzheimer’s
- Care and support for patients and their families
How can you help?
If you want to support Alzheimer’s and dementia research, then here are a few ideas of what to do…
There are lots of worthwhile causes, like The Alzheimer’s Association, dedicated to Alzheimer’s and dementia that you could donate money to. Whether it’s a one-off donation or ongoing monthly payments, every little helps. It’s a good idea to do some research into a charity before donating to them to make sure you know what your money is being used for.
Another way to donate money to an Alzheimer’s charity is to plan an event or activity that intends to raise money for that charity. It could be a charity auction or a sponsored run, for example. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a regular event that takes place across the country, with all participants raising money for Alzheimer’s research.
Check out their website to find a walk near you.
A single person can’t fight Alzheimer’s alone, so another worthwhile activity is to raise awareness about the disease and its research to encourage more people to donate and support the cause. Organized events like the ideas mentioned above can help to achieve this. You can also simply engage in conversation about it, both online and in-person, and wear clothing or accessories advertising a related charity, for example.
It’s not always within our means to donate money to a charity, but you can still donate your time. You could volunteer to work at a charity store or to help organize or set up a charity event. Take a look to see if there are any volunteer opportunities in your local area. Or you may be able to volunteer for a clinical trial to take part in Alzheimer’s research.
